Good morning, this is First Selectwoman Peggy Lyons with an important storm alert message.
A powerful winter storm system is expected to hit our area this Sunday night into Monday. Strong winds of up to 60 mph are expected, heavy rainfall, and flooding in coastal areas and along river and streams due to heavy rain. A High Wind Warning and Coastal Flood Warning has been issued for our area. Numerous power outages are expected.
This system will enter Connecticut early Sunday evening with conditions beginning to deteriorate in the overnight hours. Wind gusts are expected to ramp up late Sunday night and will be strongest near daybreak on Monday. High winds of up to 60 mph from the southeast coupled with high tide in Madison around 2:45 a.m. and again at 3:00 p.m. tomorrow are both likely to result in coastal flooding. Strong winds and rainfall are expected to begin tapering off early Monday afternoon.
All residents should be preparing for this storm event, including securing loose items such as holiday decorations outside that might be thrown around by wind or rain, preparing for possible flooding in roadways and neighborhoods, and preparing for possible power outages. In the event of power outages, be sure to run generators outdoors and away from windows and doors.
The Town Emergency Operations Team is making storm preparations and coordinating with Eversource for possible power outages. Please contact 911 if you are experiencing an emergency or see a downed power line blocking a road. Do not approach it.
