May Bike Safety Rodeo

To celebrate National Bike Month in May, BPAC sponsored a Bike Safety Rodeo for 3-8 year olds.  The Senior Center grounds and large parking areas were transformed into 6 safety stations, ranging from helmet and bike checks to learning one arm turn signals and how to brake, ride curves, and manage through a slalom course.  Madison’s Emergency Services filled one parking area with a police motorcycle, EMS ambulance and two fire trucks.  Upon completion of the 6 safety stations, kids received a Bike Safety Certificate from First Selectwoman Peggy Lyons.

Following the success of the Rodeo in 2022, BPAC is already making plans to sponsor 2023 Open Parking Lot Bike Riding events in April and May, and another Bike Safety Rodeo in June.

Bike/Walk Master Plan

Madison BPAC’s primary charge from the BOS is to create a long-term Bike/Walk Master Plan to make biking and walking in Madison safer and more accessible.  In March, 2022, a Road Safety Audit (RSA) of Madison’s Downtown was completed to add to the three prior RSAs.  All four RSAs provide professional suggestions and ideas to help guide road improvements that can be included in the Master Plan.

  • 2022 Downtown RSA
  • 2021 Route 1 RSA from Hammonasset to Clinton
  • 2020 Safe Routes to School RSA for Green Hill Road campus
  • 2019 Shoreline RSA

Madison Police Department and BPAC Collaborate with Ashley’s For an Ice Cream initiative rewarding good Bike/Walk Safety practices.

BPAC created a colorful certificate reading: Congratulations! You have been identified as someone w

One town resident summed up the reaction:  This week the Police did something really smart.  If you were demonstrating safe road habits as a bicyclist or pedestrian, you got pulled over, thanked for being a good street citizen and rewarded with an Ashley’s gift certificate.  Needless to say, word flew through the under 12 community and all the kids are making their parents abide.

Community Crosswalk Guidelines Approved by the Board of Selectmen

In late Spring, 2022, the guidelines that BPAC developed for the town to use in allowing Community Crosswalks were approved by the BOS.  Community Crosswalks use paint and patterns designed to highlight community spirit and bring vibrancy to a pedestrian crossing.
