Madison Awarded $1 million of federal funding to improve the Town’s Emergency Shelter

The Town of Madison is pleased to announce the recent award of a $1 million from the federal Community Project Funding program to assist the Town in upgrading its emergency shelter facility. Funding for this grant was approved as part of the Fiscal 2023 Consolidated Appropriations Act and will be used to purchase and install a new generator at Polson Middle School for the purposes of relocating the Town’s emergency shelter from its current location at the Town Campus Gym.

As a coastal community along the Connecticut shoreline, Madison continues to experience a significant rise in storm related events that require Town government to provide greater emergency services to its residents. Each storm is unique, but can result in extensive and prolonged loss of electricity, life threatening flooding, and significant damage to critical public infrastructure. To prepare and protect our most vulnerable residents from these events, the Town must offer an adequate shelter facility that provides necessary services during a state of emergency and allows residents to be more resilient in post-storm recovery efforts. Moving the Town’s emergency shelter to Polson Middle School will enable Town emergency operations to offer the community an improved shelter facility, better services and more amenities before, during, and after severe storm events.

Thank you to Senator Blumenthal for sponsoring this important infrastructure project through the federal appropriation process. And thank you to your Congressional partners, including Senator Murphy and Congressman Joe Courtney, for supporting the Town’s request.
