First Selectwoman's Community Update

First Selectwomans community update

Good evening Madison,

Election Day is this coming Tuesday, November 8th.

Charter Revision on Tuesday’s Ballot

An important reminder that there will be two important local questions on the ballot this Tuesday, November 8th regarding changes to the Madison Town Charter. Both questions are the result of a lengthy public process spearheaded by a volunteer Charter Review Commission charged with updating our Town Charter, which currently dates back to 2006.  The two Madison questions will be listed as Question #2 and Question #3 on Tuesday’s ballot:

  • Question #2 asks if the term for members of the Board of Selectmen, including the First Selectman, should be extended to 4 years from 2 years. If approved, this would apply to board members elected in the 2023 municipal elections
  • Question #3 asks if the Town should adopt all other proposed changes as recommended by the Charter Review Commission.

For more information on the proposed changes, please visit www.madisonct.org/CharterReview for an explanatory text outlining some of the more substantive proposed changes and a redline version of the existing Charter highlighting all proposed changes.  Printed copies are available in the Town Clerk’s office at the Madison Town Campus, at the Senior Center, and at the Scranton Library.

For questions on the proposed changes, please email charterinfo@madisonct.org by Monday, November 7th at 3 p.m. The town will respond as soon as possible.

Absentee Ballots / Voting on November 8th

The 2022 State and Federal Election will be held this Tuesday, November 8th.  At this late date, on-time delivery of mailed ballots is not reliable.  The Town Clerk recommends registered voters visit the Town Clerk’s office in person to complete an Absentee Ballot Application and Ballot.  Voters have until Monday, November 7th at 4:30 p.m. to obtain an Absentee Ballot.  Applications must be fully completed to receive a ballot.  The drop box located outside of Town Hall is open and ballots must be returned by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day to be counted.

For those residents who missed the deadline to register to vote, Connecticut allows Election Day Registration (EDR). To register and vote on Election Day, please visit the Madison Town Campus, 8 Campus Drive, Room A from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Polls and Election Day Registration (EDR) will be open on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8th, from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.  at the following voting locations:

  • District 1 voters go to Walter C. Polson Middle School, 302 Green Hill Rd.
  • District 2 voters go to Robert H. Brown Intermediate School, 980 Durham Rd. (Rt. 79)
  • EDR voters go to Madison Town Campus, 8 Campus Drive, Room A

More information on the Election, Absentee Ballots and voting locations is available at www.madisonct.org/vote, or contact the Town Clerk’s office or Registrars of Voters at 203-245-5600. View a sample ballot on our website, including all three ballot questions.

Veterans Day

Next Friday, November 11th at 11:00 a.m. the Town, in coordination with local veteran’s organizations, will be holding Madison’s annual Veteran’s Day Ceremony at the monuments on the Town Green. All are welcome to attend this commemoration service to honor those who have served our country in the armed services.

Madison Police Stuff-A-Cruiser

The Madison Police Department is holding its annual Stuff-A-Cruiser event on Friday, November 18th from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. with collection sites at the Madison Stop & Shop and Robert Food Store locations. In addition, they will be collecting food donations at the Madison Police Department through December 31st

Affordable Housing Committee – Volunteers Needed – Deadline Extended

The Board of Selectmen is seeking volunteers for its recently established Affordable Housing Committee. This committee will assist the Town in implementing Madison’s recently adopted Affordable Housing Plan and work with municipal staff, commissions, and stakeholders on housing initiatives. If you are interested in expanding Madison's housing stock to create a more economically diverse community, please visit our website to read more about the Affordable Housing Committee and how to complete an application. The application deadline has been extended to Friday, November 11th

Madison Turkey Trot

The 44th annual Lenny & Joe’s Madison Turkey Trot will be held on Thanksgiving Day at 10:00 a.m. The 5 mile race and 2 mile walk with both start and finish is in the heart of Madison on the historic Madison Town Green. New Elementary School Building Project Workshop

Tecton Architects, the architecture firm designing the new PreK-5 school building on Mungertown Road, will hold a second workshop on Wednesday, November 9th to solicit community input as multiple conceptual options for the new building are explored. All Madison residents are encouraged to attend and participate. The workshop will run from 6-8 p.m. on Zoom.
