First Selectwoman's Community Update

First Selectwomans community update

Good evening, this is First Selectwoman Peggy Lyons with today’s biweekly update

2022-2023 Budget Referendum

This Tuesday, May 17th, the Town will be holding its annual Budget Referendum.  The Total Requested Budget for the Town and Madison Public Schools is $91.4 million, which represents a 3.3% increase over the previous year. If the Budget is approved, the Board of Finance will set the mill rate on Wednesday and has indicated it is anticipating a mill rate increase of less than 2%. New tax bills will be issued in late June. Detailed information on the Requested 2022-2023 Budget is available on the Town website at https://www.madisonct.org/874/Budget-Information.

Absentee ballots are available in the Town Clerk’s office. Applications are available in the Town Clerk’s Office and on the website. The Town Clerk’s drop box is also open to receive applications or ballots. Additionally, the Registrars of Voters would like voters to know the polls will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on May 17th.  District 1 voters go to Walter C. Polson Middle School at 302 Green Hill Road.  District 2 voters go to Dr. Robert H. Brown Intermediate School, 980 Durham Road (Route 79). More information on the Referendum, absentee ballots and voting locations is available at www.madisonct.org/vote.

Memorial Day Weekend

On Monday, May 30th, the Town will be holding a Memorial Day Parade followed by a remembrance ceremony on the Town Green. The Parade will step off at 10 a.m. and start at the intersection of Samson Rock Drive and the Boston Post Road, then proceed west on the Boston Post Road through the downtown area, concluding with a ceremony at the Town Green.  Note that this will create traffic detours and road closures during the event.

A reminder that parking stickers or daily parking passes will be required at all three Town beaches starting Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Gate guards and lifeguards will only be staffed on weekends through mid-June due to limited staffing availability. Starting June 18th, all beaches will be fully staffed seven days a week until Labor Day.  Please visit the Town website at www.madisonct.org/BeachStickers for more information on pricing and ways to purchase a sticker.

Affordable Housing Plan

The Board of Selectmen will be holding a hybrid public hearing on Monday, May 23rd at 6pm to listen to public comment on the draft Affordable Housing Plan prepared by the ad-hoc Affordable Housing Plan Committee. The draft plan proposal is available at www.madisonct.org/DraftAffordablePlan. Details of all meetings are available on the Town’s calendar at www.madisonct.org

Committees & Commissions

The Town is seeking applications for the Town’s Planning & Zoning Commission. This year is an exciting time to be on the Commission because the Town will be updating its Plan of Conservation & Development, an important 10-year strategic plan that is intended to guide local actions and provide a framework for consistent decision-making with regard to conservation and development activities.  If you are interested in learning more about the Planning & Zoning Commission, please contact Erin Mannix at mannixe@madisonct.org.

Have a great weekend Madison!
