First Selectwoman's Community Update

First Selectwomans community update

Good evening, this is First Selectwoman Peggy Lyons with today’s biweekly update

COVID Update

Madison currently has 25 active cases in our community and, unfortunately, 2 hospitalizations.  Please note that this data does not include at-home testing results. Although community spread of the virus is slowing across the state, we still strongly advise residents to wear a mask in any public setting or indoor gathering, and get vaccinated or receive a COVID-19 booster shot if you have not already done so. These measures will provide protection from catching the virus or experiencing severe disease.

The Town continues to have a supply of free N95 masks for residents to pick-up at 3 locations throughout town during normal business hours. Masks will only be available until our recent shipment from the state runs out. Please visit the Town website for distribution locations and regular business hours. For those concerned about the recent mask recall, the state has informed us they completed an extensive audit of all mask supplies and verified to us that those supplied to local towns for community distribution were not included in a recall. Please contact the Emergency Management Department for more information.

Winter Storm

The Town continues to monitor and prepare for the major winter storm approaching Connecticut tonight and into tomorrow. We can expect a significant storm with possible blizzard conditions in the eastern part of the state, and snow totals up to 18”-24”. The snow will start before daybreak Saturday and continue until the evening. Winds could gust up to 50 - 60 MPH at times along the coast with temperatures in the upper teens and low 20’s. The impact on travel could be major with very low visibility and snow-covered roads. We continue to urge residents to prepare for road closures and possible power outages. As a precaution, on Saturday, January 29, all Town facilities, beaches and parks will be closed and all programming activities are cancelled.

February 15 Referendum

I want to remind residents that the Town will be holding a referendum on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 regarding the Madison School Renewal Plan, the Academy Community Center Proposal, and the sale of Island Avenue School.  Information on each of these projects can be found on the Town website at www.madisonct.org/referenda, including explanatory texts recently prepared by the Town that outlines background information about the projects. Information related to voting, polling hours and locations, and requesting an absentee ballot can be found on the Town Clerk’s website. Absentee ballots are now available to those who submit an application and qualify to vote.

Affordable Housing Survey

The Madison Ad-hoc Affordable Housing Plan Committee is in the process of developing an affordable housing plan for our Town.  The Committee is seeking community feedback and will be releasing a survey next Monday on the Town’s website as well as through the Madison Alerts system and Backpack Express.  While some of our residents may have already taken a regional planning survey, we ask that residents please take a few minutes to complete Madison’s local survey with questions aimed specifically at our Town’s needs.  The more our citizenry is engaged, the greater the likelihood we can develop a successful plan to serve the housing needs of our community.

Stay safe and warm Madison.
