[ARCHIVED] Town of Madison Announces Step Forward on Downtown Utility Relocation Project

Downtown Utility Relocation Project

For Immediate Release

October 20, 2021 - The Town of Madison is pleased to announce plans to move forward on completing the Town’s downtown utility relocation project. Yesterday, an outstanding electrical easement with Eversource was recorded with the Town Clerk for the properties at 690 and 710 Boston Post Road. Having this important easement finalized and in place now offers the Town the opportunity to begin the process of taking down the poles on the southside of Boston Post Road in Madison’s downtown center.

After securing funding for the project’s completion in the Fiscal Year 2021-2022 Budget, the Town has been eager to move forward with this important step as part of its long-running Downtown Center Project, which had been delayed for years. Completion of this easement is a critical part of that process. The next steps will be to coordinate with local property owners along State Route 1 to finalize electrical work, award the construction contract to complete the infrastructure, and work with Eversource to transition electrical service from the poles to underground conduit, with a targeted completion of summer 2022 for the street’s southside.

According to First Selectwoman Peggy Lyons, “I recognize that everyone involved in this project, whether it be planning committee volunteers, property owners, or the public, are eager to see this move forward after years of obstacles and delays. Removal of the utility poles will be a tremendous benefit to the entire Madison community and I am excited we can get the process finally moving forward for at least the southside of the street for now. In addition to creating a more beautiful main street atmosphere, underground electrical service will provide more reliable service for business owners and should enhance long-term property values for commercial property owners. After making this a priority and getting the funding approved, I am hopeful we will finally bring an end to this phase in the project very soon.”

This announcement follows the recent completion of an easement on the north side of Madison’s downtown at 725 Boston Post Road.  For the adjoining property at 703 Boston Post Road, Eversource, the Town, and the property owners are in active negotiations for the remaining outstanding easement but anticipate reaching an agreement soon.

Please contact First Selectwoman Peggy Lyons with any additional questions on the project.
