[ARCHIVED] Hurricane Henri Alert

Madison CT Henri Hurricane Storm Alert

Good evening, this is First Selectwoman Peggy Lyons with an important emergency alert on approaching Hurricane Henri.

Hurricane and storm surge watches were issued earlier today for our area due to the expected arrival of Hurricane Henri within the next 36 hours. Recent forecasts show Henri approaching Madison as a Category 1 hurricane and passing near the eastern portions of the state on Sunday, with a landfall expected Sunday night between 7 and 8 p.m. in our area. A storm surge of 3-5 feet is expected to cause moderate to major flooding along southeastern Connecticut during both the morning and evening astronomical high tides on Sunday. Due to significant risk of flooding in areas south of the Boston Post Rd. in Madison, the Town may be required to issue evacuation notices for residents located in vulnerable coastal areas. We will be tracking the most up to date forecast throughout this evening and consult with the state’s Emergency Services before issuing any formal evacuation orders tomorrow. However, if you live in a beach community, we highly recommend you start making preparations for a possible evacuation by early Sunday morning. This should also include ensuring you have adequate supplies of medications and oxygen if needed. More information will be forthcoming on the areas most at risk along with the hours of operation of our Emergency Shelter located at the Town Campus Gym.

In addition to storm surge concerns, dangerous rip currents and high surf conditions are expected to develop this weekend along with damaging winds and heavy rainfall starting Saturday night into Sunday night for our area. Winds could gust from 60 to 85 MPH at times on Sunday evening, and cause moderate to major tree and powerline damage.  The Town Emergency Operations Team is coordinating with Eversource and other utility providers for anticipated power outages in our area. It is important that all residents take the time now to prepare for major power outages for an extended period of time.

As a precaution, on Sunday, August 22, all Town beaches and parks will be closed and the Summer Concert on the Green has been cancelled. We also encourage everyone to be aware of the potentially dangerous marine conditions this storm will bring to Long Island Sound throughout tomorrow as the storm approaches.  Also take the time now to secure any loose items in your yard that have a potential to be thrown around by wind or rising water. Please check the Town website for the most up-to-date information on the storm and any related facility closures.

Stay safe Madison.
