[ARCHIVED] First Selectwoman's Community Update

First Selectwomans community update

Good evening this is First Selectwoman Peggy Lyons with today’s bi-weekly update.

Madison currently has 8 active COVID-19 cases in our community with no residents hospitalized; current cases include unvaccinated residents and minors. Although Madison’s case numbers remain low relative to other towns in New Haven County, it is important that all of us maintain our vigilance in stopping the spread.  The best way to mitigate spread is to get vaccinated and wear a mask in indoor public settings, along with frequent handwashing. Although Madison has some of the highest vaccination rates in the state, we still have many eligible residents who have not been vaccinated. Children under the age of 12 are not able to be vaccinated at this time and are more vulnerable to the virus. As the school year approaches and families get ready for fall sports and other school-based activities, please consider getting your age eligible-child vaccinated.  If you or anyone you know are having difficulties getting access to the vaccine, please contact our Health Department at (203) 245-5681 for assistance in finding a vaccine clinic.

Town Facilities Mask Policy

As a precautionary measure, the Town reinstituted an indoor mask requirement for all town facilities starting August 9th.  This mask policy applies to all Town employees and members of the public regardless of vaccination status. Rather than visiting Town Campus in person, we encourage residents to access departmental services online when possible, or use available drop boxes located across from the Police Department.  We also encourage residents to wear a mask in any indoor public space throughout Madison, including local retail stores, restaurants, churches, and other indoor settings.

MYFS Assistance with Back to School

Madison Public Schools will be back in session on Monday, August 30th.  With students returning after a year of uncertainty and variations of distance learning, MYFS would like to help local families with the transition through its “Be Cool for School” program.  This program helps Madison families manage any level of back-to-school nerves and may also provide some funding through gift certificates to help with some of those back-to-school costs. For more information, please visit the MYFS “Be Cool For School” webpages for back-to-school tips to address the issues related to these unique times.

Healing Fields and September 11th

To honor those men and women lost 20 years ago on 9/11, and to pay tribute to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to our country, the Exchange Club will be hosting a commemorative Healing Field on the Madison Green. This event will be a display of over 100 flags distanced in rows allowing people to walk amongst them and view the names and dedications of those represented by each flag. More information on this event can be found at https://www.madisonexchange.org/healingfield  In addition, the Town will also hold its annual remembrance ceremony on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at 5 p.m. adjacent to the Healing Fields.

Have a great weekend Madison!
