[ARCHIVED] Statement from the Board of Selectmen

Board of Selectmen

The Madison Board of Selectmen strongly condemns the acts of violence and insurrection committed on January 6, 2021 in Washington, D.C.  Efforts to disrupt basic democratic processes in our nation’s capital violate that which we hold dear and threaten the very foundation of our democracy.  The images of the attack on our Capitol building, our lawmakers, and all those who work there on behalf of the American people are both disheartening and disturbing.

As elected officials sworn to support the Constitution, we expect our national leaders to honor the peaceful, timely transfer of power in order to ensure our nation’s life and liberty. Disruptions to our government have serious consequences for the stability of the country.  Public trust in our government, and effective leadership at all levels of government, are essential not only for our democracy, but also to shape an effective response to national emergencies, including today’s pandemic.

After this upheaval, it is time to heal our country both spiritually and physically.  Government should now be focused on the resolution of problems and the mediation of differences to unite us as one people. This is a moment to reject hate, and commit ourselves to building an ever-stronger community of caring.  We are in this together Madison.
