Good afternoon, this is First Selectwoman Peggy Lyons with an important emergency update.
The NOAA Storm Prediction Center has placed most of Connecticut in the Enhanced Risk Category for severe thunderstorms this afternoon. Severe thunderstorms and/or tornado watches may be issued as early as this afternoon. The line of strong thunderstorms currently in upstate New York is expected to intensify and move quickly to our state. Although the exact path of these storms is uncertain, the most likely time frame for severe thunderstorms in our area is from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Any thunderstorms that develop (especially supercells) may contain strong winds as high as 60 – 70 MPH, possible hail, and a chance of tornados.
Depending on the path of the storms, the Town may close beach and recreation facilities. All afternoon outdoor sports activities have been cancelled. As a precautionary measure, we recommend all residents take time to secure loose items in your yard that have potential to be thrown around by wind, and prepare for possible, isolated power outages and tree damage.
Stay safe Madison.
Thank you.
