Post storm Isaias Message 8/12/2020

Message from the First Selectwoman Madison, CT

Dear Residents,

It is now over one week since Tropical Storm Isaias hit our community, and I am grateful to announce that according to Eversource less than eight households in Madison remain without power; this represents a significant shift from our outage peak at 81% of all customers and we are hopeful that all will be restored by midnight tonight.  Although the restoration process has been a long and difficult one for many, special thanks go out to the utility linemen and linewomen, public safety and public works personnel for all their hard work and dedication.  Throughout the next few weeks, Town public works crews will be working to remove the extensive debris alongside roads and at town facilities as a result of the storm. However, please note that Madison residents are responsible for any debris removal from their own properties.  In order to assist residents in their clean-up efforts, the Town has extended the hours at the Town Brush & Leaf Disposal Facility to 3 p.m. daily through the end of this week.  Note that no logs greater than 3 inches in diameter are allowed to be disposed of at the facility.

I know many residents continue to have issues with internet and cell phone service due to infrastructure damage resulting from the storm.  Please note that town government is not responsible for residential internet service, cable television service, or cell phone service.  If you are still having issues with accessing any of these items, please contact your service provider to report an outage.

I am also grateful to report that there have been no new COVID-19 cases in Madison this past week.  We currently have only 2 active cases, both of which are recovering at home.  We are fortunate our state continues to fare well despite national trends. Take notice that the travel advisory issued by the Governor requiring self-quarantine for 14 days when arriving from certain states continues to fluctuate. Please continue to check the state list if you plan on traveling.   Let’s continue to protect each other from resurgence by practicing social distancing, wearing masks in public when distancing is not possible, and washing hands frequently.

I want to remind people that due to the extensive power outages throughout the state and public health concerns due to the pandemic, we are temporarily limiting access to all Madison town beaches to residents only through this Sunday, August 16th. This applies to people 16 years of age and older, and includes walk-ins to our beach facilities.  Residents arriving on foot or bike need to present proof of residency such as a driver’s license, student ID, tax bill, lease agreement, or locally addressed mail. Beach stickers are still required seven days a week to use beach parking lots and no visitor parking passes will be sold through August 16th.  Capacity limitations remain in place in order to ensure social distancing can be maintained.

Stay safe and healthy Madison.
