We have been notified by the State of Connecticut department of health about the Adoption of a Model Food Code by the legislature that
became effective on June 21, 2017. The notice can be found here [Public Act 17-93 Notice]. It becomes effective in July of 2018, and calls for all towns to adopt the FDA food code, which requires mandatory licensing of food establishments and other statutory changes were also included.
This past year, our health department took on a major initiative to update our health ordinances and require permitting of all food establishments. At the time it seemed like a lot to the establishments that were affected, but it was a necessary step for us to take. While the reasons are numerous, the most important is the prevention of foodborne disease.
