Veterans Information

A veteran is described as a person who has served in the armed forces as required within Connecticut General Statute 12-81 (19), (20), (21), (22), (23), (24), (25) or (26) and 27-103. Currently the benefit is $9,000 off the assessed value of either your real estate or your motor vehicle.

Any resident of the Town of Madison that is a veteran of the armed forces in a time of war or is still serving in the armed forces may be entitled to this exemption.

How to make an application for an exemption pursuant to CGS 12-81 (19):


Discharged with DD214

  • File your DD214 with the Madison Town Clerk no later than September 30.
  • You must be a Madison resident as of October 1.
  • Have record ownership of property as of October 1.
  • You must have at least 90 days of active service during a stated period of war. If the campaign lasted less than 90 days then you must have served in a combat or combat support role for the duration of the campaign unless you were separated from service earlier because of a service-connected disability rated by the Veterans Administration. Active service means service in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force or Coast Guard.

Currently Serving But Unable to Appear by Reason of that Service

  • You must be a Madison resident as of October 1.
  • Have record ownership of property as of October 1.
  • You must have at least 90 days of active service during a stated period of war. If the campaign lasted less than 90 days then you must have served in a combat or combat support role for the duration of the campaign unless you were separated from service earlier because of a service-connected disability rated by the Veterans Administration. Active service means service in the Army, Navy Marine Corps, Air Force or Coast Guard.
  • You must forward to the Madison Assessor annually, and no later than September 30th, a written statement, signed by your commanding officer attesting to the dates of your service.

Currently Serving in a Theater of War and Unable to Appear

  • You must be a Madison resident as of October 1.
  • Have record ownership of property as of October 1.
  • You must have at least 90 days of active service during a stated period of war. If the campaign lasted less than 90 days then you must have served in a combat or combat support role for the duration of the campaign unless you were separated from service earlier because of a service-connected disability rated by the Veterans Administration. Active service means service in the Army, Navy Marine Corps, Air Force or Coast Guard.
  • A notarized statement from a parent, guardian, spouse or legal representative stating that you are personally unable to appear by reason of your service in a theater of war and attesting to your dates of service must be presented annually to the Madison Assessor's Office no later than September 30.

ADDITIONAL EXEMPTIONS

If you are presently receiving a Veteran's exemption you may qualify for an additional exemption provided by Connecticut General Statues 12-81f.

Application for the Additional Veterans Exemption Pursuant to 12-81f

  • Filing period is between February 1 and October 1 of any given year.
  • Must file for the exemption biennially.
  • Must meet income requirements
  • Must provide documentation regarding qualifying income (i.e. federal tax return).
